A Jack (or Jill)-of-All Trades – Becky Lane
If your office, department or building is running smoothly, chances are the administrative professionals who support you have a lot to do with it.
They seem to be a jack-of-all-trades, problem solvers, record keepers, schedulers and coordinators, among many other hats they wear.
During the pandemic, as more teams worked from home, the role of administrative professionals became especially instrumental in providing cohesion despite separate offices. They are the backbone of any successful operation.
Becky Lane, the executive assistant to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center President Kathie Johnson, shares her experiences.
When you ask Becky to explain what she does in a workday, she responds honestly:
“What don’t I do?”
“My day is never the same and can change at any moment,” says Becky, who’s been an administrative professional for 35 years with 25 years in the healthcare field.
“I am responsible for calendaring, meeting prep, answering questions, mentoring, onboarding and hospital-wide team member event planning. I am considered by many to be the ‘go-to’ person when they have questions or need help.”
Over the years, Becky has received numerous certifications:
She is also a Commonwealth of Virginia notary public.
Becky will celebrate her fifth anniversary with Sentara this year, and she relishes her role as a “wing woman.”
On regular office days, she and her three suite mates enjoy taking a break with lunch together and going for walks in warmer months.
But Becky is no stranger to the cold. In fact, she used to drive a three-ton dump truck with a 12-foot plow when she worked at Port Columbus International Airport in Ohio (now called John Glenn Columbus International Airport) as an administrative assistant and on the snow removal team.
Becky’s been married to her husband for 30 years and has two sons, ages 24 and 21, both college graduates and professionals who are “the apple of their momma’s eye.”
My colleagues know they can come to me to help with anything, and I will find a way to get it done!”
— Becky, who looks forward to planned lunch on Administrative Professionals Day for about 50 team members.
