Reginald Barnes
Central Sterile Supply and Equipment Room Manager

Once Reginald Barnes began working in healthcare while in the United States Navy, he never considered a career in anything else. Reginald is the Central Sterile Supply and Equipment Room Manager at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital (SVBGH).

My Naval career translated into my current position,” he says. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted todo after high school, so I enlisted in the Navy at age 19 as a Hospital Corpsman.”

Hospital Corpsmen assist health care professionals in providing medical care to Navy personnel and their families. At Sentara, Reginald manages similar responsibilities: he oversees the daily operations of reprocessing surgical instrument and equipment for the Operating Room. He also runs the daily operation and support of specialty patient equipment and code carts.

As a manager, Reginald pays close attention to department morale. He coordinates a staff lunch several times a year and regularly recognizes team members’ service anniversaries and other milestones.

SVBGH depends on my coworkers and me to perform and execute our jobs correct the firsttime. There are no room for errors,” Reginald says. “I feel that I contribute enormously to Sentara’s mission.”

Reginald has continued to advance his career since he first joined Sentara as a Surgical Technologist in 2016. After completing his bachelor’s degree in health care administration, he was promoted to manager in 2019 and earned his certification as a Central Sterile Supply (CSS) Technician. And he’s not stopping there—Reginald plans to soon begin a master’s degree program.

Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, Reginald enjoys music and is occasionally nostalgic for the days he played trumpet and piano. “I would love to pick those two instruments back up and learn to play better!”

He says he continues to work with Sentara because of the opportunities for professional growth and the many ways in which Sentara has supported its employees and the communities it serves, including Virginia Beach, where he and his family live.

I have always been very passionate in the involvement of helping people.”
