Dr. Deepak Talreja is a Cardiologist with Sentara Cardiology Specialists. He has worked at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital (SVBGH) since 2003 and is currently the Director of Cardiology. He and his team of nurses and cath lab technicians perform a variety of cardiac procedures including stents, pacemakers, valve replacements and open-heart surgery.
“It’s a real honor to practice in the community of Virginia Beach. I grew up here, so I take care of a lot of people I know. This is also a really fun environment to work in, we have a great team, and we use state-of-the-art technology to perform the most complex procedures around.’
Dr. Talreja is also a Physician Champion for SVBGH which means he acts as a liaison between physicians and other hospital colleagues when it comes to new projects or concerns that arise.
He recently spearheaded a project related to physician-nurse collaboration that opened the lines of communication between these two critical roles.
Too often I think, a new nurse may be intimidated to share their opinion with one of the physicians, and we really don’t want that to be the case,” he says. “We want to interact and work together as a team.”
There are many opportunities for nurses to learn from physicians in the hospital environment, from interdisciplinary grand rounds to teaching conferences. “Each month the cath lab has a conference where we learn about different topics, and I have some of the nurses present on topics that they have learned about. It really creates that spirit of everyone’s learning together.”
Dr. Talreja is also on the board of the Virginia Beach free health clinic where he helps care for indigent patients who don’t have the resources for quality healthcare.
Dr. Talreja and his team also partner with associations such as The American College of Cardiology and The American Heart Association to help fundraise and participate in community events like banquets, charity events and heart walks.
Truthfully it’s hard to come up with a best day,” he says. “It’s like asking someone who has gone to Busch Gardens which was their favorite Busch Gardens trip, they’re all so great it’s hard to pick. I love coming to work, we really have an opportunity to help people and have fun with what we do. I’ve done about 12,000 of these cardiac caths, and there are still days where I learn something new. Working as a team is what makes this fun and a success for the patients.”
