Joshua Banks
CT Tech

Joshua Banks has never been satisfied with sitting idle. Whether professionally or personally, being in the thick of it and staying busy is how Joshua likes to experience life. Since joining Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as a CT Tech, he has had the opportunity to do far more than “take pictures” of his patients.

“Diagnostic imaging tests can be scary for patients because of the uncertainty,” Joshua explains. “The exchanges I get to have with patients are some of the best moments I have on the job. I always aim to make their experience as comfortable and relaxing as I can, no matter the situation.”

“At Sentara, the skills I need at a patient’s bedside are nurtured in the same way my technical skills are cultivated.”

Working at a Level 1 trauma center means Joshua’s shifts are busy and intense—exactly the way he wants it. He originally chose a career in healthcare because of an early fascination with human anatomy. That fascination also led him to prioritizing his own personal health through fitness.

I am a certified health nut! Being able to have work/life balance at Sentara so I can exercise and stay fit keeps me physically healthy, but it also keeps my mind sharp and ensures I’m at my best when on the job,” says Joshua.

Joshua also credits his team’s support for his ability to be at his best on the job. Being surrounded by passionate and professional people creates an environment that centers growth and learning while still providing industry-leading care. His desire for lifelong learning and Sentara’s focus on continued education has led Joshua to pursue AART certification as a registered CT Tech.

Giving back support and kindness to his Sentara team members is the best reward Joshua has found at work.

“Helping and supporting my peers through difficult times is incredibly rewarding to me. Receiving a big thanks and a smile can turn an everyday shift into a really rewarding experience. That’s why I’m excited to get up and go to work for my shifts. I know that whatever challenges I may face, I have the opportunity show up for my team, my patients and my community.”

When Joshua isn’t at work, the gym or on the karaoke mic singing ’90s R&B, he’s working in the community to help others prioritize their health. His nonprofit organization launched the nation’s largest fitness event called “Flex 4 Change” and he has even bigger plans for the future.
