Longtime ‘Sports Junkie’ From Seattle Moves to Shenandoah

Tom Perry, originally from Seattle, describes himself as a longtime “sports junkie,” and a huge Mariners and Seahawks fan. It’s this enthusiasm for sports as well as exercise that led him to a career as a Home Health Physical Therapist for Sentara Home Care Services.

“Exercise is one of my life’s passions,” says Tom, who earned his doctorate of physical therapy in 2017 as part of the charter class at Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences at Mary Baldwin University. “Being able to pair my passion for exercise with the ability to improve people’s lives and help them through recovery, it’s no surprise I ended up in this career.”

In order to help his patients succeed, Tom evaluates their ability to move safely around the home and transfer from various surfaces. Once this assessment is done, he works with his patients to develop a treatment plan to maximize physical function so they can return to the activities that bring them joy.

“Most of the patients we work with are going through a rough time in their life,” says Tom, who lives in Bridgewater, VA. “During these times, it is difficult for them to be optimistic. But it’s my job to show them that they have the potential to overcome their challenges and regain their prior level of function.”

One of his favorite things about his job is the flexibility his schedule brings like being able to listen to podcasts en route to appointments or touch base with his family during the day.

“Working at Sentara has been rewarding in many ways,” Tom adds. “The great leadership and teamwork at our facility has allowed me to thrive at work.”

Tom and his wife, Brenna, have three children, Oliver, Theodore and Brooklynn. He loves to spend time outdoors, particularly at the park with his family or on a long hike or run.
