Colleen Marshall | Registered Nurse Unit Coordinator | Advanced Heart Failure Unit, Sentara Heart Hospital
Colleen Marshall says the opportunities for career advancement at Sentara are abundant. She should know— in her first three years with Sentara she was promoted from a New Graduate Registered Nurse to Charge Nurse and is now the RN Unit Coordinator for the Advanced Heart Failure Unit at Sentara Heart Hospital.
She also is quick to acknowledge that she doesn’t do it alone. Working at the only center in the region that provides specialized comprehensive care for patients suffering from any form of heart failure, at any stage, Colleen and her colleagues care for patients with a variety of needs, including those recovering from heart transplants and adjusting to living with mechanical heart pumps.
“The teamwork up here is like I’ve never seen before, it is amazing.”
“The teamwork up here is like I’ve never seen before, it is amazing. When I first graduated from nursing school, I shadowed on a couple of different units but this one stuck out because even in the four hours that I was here shadowing, the teamwork really shined through,” she says. “Literally all you have to do is poke your head out the door and somebody will come running to help you.”
The teamwork extends to her manager, who Colleen says is always “on the floor” supporting the RNs and offering help when needed.
Colleen is a native of Norfolk, leaving briefly to attend James Madison University. After graduation, she decided to move back home because she loves the area so much. When she’s not at work she enjoys going to the beach and exploring the local parks with her dogs. She is also eager to welcome new colleagues to the Sentara Heart Hospital team.
“I just think this is a great unit for anybody,” she says. “There’s so many opportunities to learn and everybody’s willing to teach you and help you along the way as you get more comfortable with this specialty group of patients.”
