Annette Cashatt
Registered Nurse

Annette Cashatt, RN, Behavioral Health Unit Coordinator, Sentara RMH Medical Center

Annette credits her mom, an LPN who received her nurse training in the Army during Vietnam, with providing the support and encouragement to become a nurse.

“While I was in community college, my mom was diagnosed with cervical cancer and had to stop working,” Annette recalls. “My dad had already passed away from pulmonary fibrosis when I was twelve, so to sustain the household, I really had to make a careful choice about my career path, and I decided to pursue nursing.”

She says nursing was the perfect blend of opportunities to make the world a better place and a way to ensure she could take care of herself and her family. Annette took advantage of a Sentara hospital scholarship to finish her BSN and quickly became certified in psychiatric nursing. The training not only advanced her career in caring for patients at the hospital, but she also found herself using the skills from her med surg and behavioral health experience to care for her mom throughout her hospice journey.

“Knowing I impact people’s lives positively is one of the best parts of this career.”
