What Katrina Dayton’s Work Family Means to Her
Often, our colleagues become more than coworkers over the years. They become trusted friends and an extension of our family. Katrina Dayton, a Medical Assistant at Sentara Family Medicine Physician at Sentara BelleHarbour (Suffolk, VA), has made a point of celebrating her team members’ accomplishments and special days. They were also there for her when she needed it most.
“I’ll never forget the love and compassion I received from my Sentara family in June 2017 when my husband passed away suddenly at age 50,” Katrina shares. “Led by my practice manager Marion J. Williams, they rallied around me and helped to make the worst time of my life more bearable.”
My primary focus at work every day is making sure our patients are treated with kindness, care and respect,” Katrina says. “Every day, I strive to make a difference and to go above and beyond for our patients.”
Katrina began her healthcare journey with Family Medicine Physicians in 2007. She started working weekends before Sentara acquired the practice in 2014. After that, she worked sick call and the phones. Since transferring to BelleHarbour last year, Katrina now works directly with patients, assisting nurse practitioner Barbara Schimming.
Caregiving runs in Katrina’s blood. Her grandmother is a registered nurse at age 85 in Brooklyn, N.Y. During part of her career, her grandmother took care of nuns in a convent.
“I helped raise my younger siblings, nephews and nieces as well as providing full-time care for my octogenarian great-grandmother,” Katrina recalls. “I was blessed to have a daughter later in life who I could shower with love.”
Katrina’s dedication spills over to her Sentara family. One of her goals is to make sure fellow team members feel valued and happy. She led the “morale committee” to ensure every work holiday and special event, like birthdays, were recognized.
“I always want to make sure my work family is celebrated,” Katrina explains.
