Angela Harrow, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center (SWRMC)

Angela started working at Williamsburg Community Hospital (now Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center) after graduation from MCV School of Pharmacy in May 1991. When she started at MCV in 1987, she was one of 100 student candidates for a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, and after her first year, the school invited her to transition into the post BS PharmD program. Many of the students in her class of ten already had pharmacy degrees along with years of experience working in the field. Angela says this shared experience made a huge difference.

“The collaboration within this environment provided an amazing learning opportunity. When I first started at Williamsburg Community Hospital, I was the first PharmD and the first pharmacist to wear a lab coat! “

Angela’s expertise and experience made her a leader early on in her career at Sentara.

A few years into my career at WCH, I was given the opportunity to start and manage the Anticoagulation Clinic,” she says. “Our clinic is now the model for current clinics.”

In her 30+ years as a pharmacist, Angela has seen many changes. When she started, her team used fax machines to transmit orders to the pharmacy and completed medication runs every hour. In the years before the Internet, she and her team relied on “big books” to look up medication questions. But she says the most interesting evolution is the use of cell phones.

“When I started, we did not have them,” she says. “A few years later, most employees had cell phones but we either kept them in our cars or turned off in our purses. Then there were the years of taking the occasional phone call, progressing to the occasional text (still hiding the phones in our purse). Today we can’t do our jobs without them! But no matter what, our focus has always been on supporting our patients safely along their path to improved health.”
