Chantaye Johnson
Dietician

As early as 9 th  grade, Chantaye Johnson knew she wanted to be a dietitian when she grew up. She started as a dietician at Sentara in 1998 and became a certified diabetes care and education specialist in 2006 so she could help people like her family members who were struggling with diabetes diagnoses.

“For those diagnosed with diabetes, working with someone like me can significantly improvetheir health through simple educate and healthy lifestyle changes,” Chantaye says. “But it’s not just about information, it’s about supporting patients through a difficult and confusing transition. Whether I’m supporting my patients or my coworkers, my focus is to help them achieve everything they want to achieve.”

Judging by the thank you cards in her office, her patients are highly appreciative of her work asa Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. She says that every time they hear about a patient’s labs improving or a patient taking extra steps to care for themselves, it’s a win for the whole team.

“I LOVE what I do,” she says. “Working with patients for positive change makes me excited to come in each morning. But my coworkers, who always have a kind word or a supportive gesture, and the community we’ve built are the reasons I’ve stayed at Sentara for nearly 25 years.”

There may be another reason Sentara is close to her heart: she met her husband Ron right at Sentara Leigh hospital when she was a dietician and he was working as an engineer in the IT department 22 years ago. They have a daughter Jada who has picked up her mother’s enthusiasm for healthy foods and recently wrote a book of healthy and healing recipes from home.
