Working in the emergency department at a hospital may seem like a job only focused on reacting to urgent situations, but the reality is that being able to react quickly requires a lot of planning. Just ask Emma Villano, an Emergency Department Technician at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
“The ER can be a chaotic place, which is why it’s so critical we plan ahead,” she says. “It’s not just about the patient in front of you, it’s also about planning for how your department affects the rest of the hospital. Whether treating a patient or doing your job, our mission is to look at the big picture instead of just focusing on acute issues.”
Emma chose a career in healthcare because of the endless opportunities for growth and the ability to help a new person every day. Just as importantly, Emma loves being a member of the employee community that’s been built at Sentara.
“Since joining Sentara, I have learned so much from my team members,” she says. “They are always taking the time to help me grow and now I am able to pay it forward as I help train new hires. It’s a demanding but welcoming environment!”
While at Sentara, Emma is also working on earning her nursing license. She cites the support of her nursing family at Sentara as a major reason she’ll be able to achieve that professional goal.
Emma enjoys maintaining a healthy lifestyle by taking care of her physical and mental wellbeing through exercise. She enjoys spending time with her family, who are a major source of support and inspiration in her life.
When you feel supported in your goals by the people you interact with every day, it makes everything seem possible.
