Athletic trainer joins Sentara after 30-year career in college athletics
Before joining Sentara as an Athletic Trainer in 2021, Scott Cook spent 18 years in the same position at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. In fact, he was the head football athletic trainer when JMU won the national championship in football in 2004 and 2016.
That’s why it’s easy to understand that when Scott joined Sentara RMH Medical Center Orthopedics and Sports Medicine after 30 years in intercollegiate athletics at five institutions, including Notre Dame and the University of Illinois, he admits he was a little nervous about the career change. Thankfully, he was welcomed with open arms by a supportive team.
Everyone in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine has been so helpful and patient as I learned the Sentara policies and procedures,” he says. “There was definitely a learning curve, and I continue to learn new things every day.”
“I’ve had the best seat in the house on game days and being able to help an injured athlete return to competition is one of the greatest feelings in the world,” says Scott, who lives in Harrisonburg with his wife, Jini. They’ve been married for 29 years and have two grown children.
For his dedication to his profession, the Mid Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association has awarded Scott the MAATA distinguished service award and the District Director’s Award.
“I love being able to help people reach their goals, whether it is an athlete being able to return to competition, or now being able to help a patient become pain-free or just be able to complete activities of daily living from which they had been unable to do.” — Scott
Experiencing camaraderie among his new colleagues has been another positive aspect of Scott’s job. The orthopedics and sports medicine team awards a monthly trophy from one staff member to another for going above and beyond to offer assistance to other staff members. Scott received the award in June.
When Scott’s not at work, he enjoys hiking at Shenandoah National Park and maintains Harrisonburg’s National Weather Service official weather station at Dale Enterprise.
