Keeping Athletes in the Game: Scott Powers

Even in high school, Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospital Medical Center athletic trainer Scott Powers looked for ways to help injured athletes and be involved with a team.

What started as an extracurricular activity, became a career of more than 30 years. Scott has spent the last six years at Sentara RMH. Currently, he’s supporting James Madison University Club and Recreation Sports.

We provide full athletic training services to student-athletes, as well as provide medical services to some home sporting events,” Scott explains.

Scott served in the Army National Guard for 10 years to help pay for college and was the athletic trainer for two military sports teams.

Simply put, a rewarding day for Scott revolves around helping others.

“If I can help someone feel better and have a smile, then it’s a good day,” Scott says.

While Scott’s skills to improve athletes’ health builds team spirit, he also takes steps to let his Sentara RMH team know how valuable they are. That might mean setting snacks out in the athletic training room on game day or ordering a pizza, notes Scott, who started as a team lead and now is a team coordinator.

SRMH has built a talented team of people from the physicians, PAs, nurses and athletic trainers,” adds Scott, whose wife, Pam Powers, has been at SRMH for 34 years and as a nurse, the last five as a case manager. “We all work together for the betterment of our patients and our community.”

Outside of work, Scott tinkers with woodworking and takes care of his family farm. He’s also served on several community boards and the Virginia Athletic Trainers Association in multiple roles. He’s grateful to call the Shenandoah Valley his home.

“The Shenandoah Valley is a beautiful place to live and work,” he says. “I have traveled around the world, and this is HOME!”
