Dunstan Walakira: Measuring the Quality of Healthcare
You could say Dunstan Walakira is obsessed with ensuring patients at Sentara receive quality care. As the manager of quality improvement for Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), his obsession becomes a service to the community. Dunstan reviews plan member medical records and analyzes data/metrics to ensure quality care for all is achieved and maintained.
One thing that makes me passionate about my work is putting myself in the shoes of those we serve,” says Dunstan, who joined the Sentara team in 2018. “I always have our patients and plan members in mind, and I strive to make sure that they receive the best healthcare possible because I would want the same for myself.”
Dunstan knows through experience that Sentara is willing to invest in the things that matter. “Not many companies are willing to invest in the communities they serve each year to ensure the best care is available. And even fewer are willing to invest the same amount into their employees each year . Sentara does that and I am truly proud to be part of the Sentara family.”
Dunstan’s experience taking care of his mother when she was sick inspired him to pursue a career in healthcare, and it was Sentara’s continual commitment to invest in employees that drew him to develop that career here.
I happened to be the sole caregiver for my mother at a time when she was severely ill,” says Dunstan, who lives with his wife Autumn in Midlothian, Va. “It was during this difficult time that I realized that the sick need all the help they can get and need us to fight for them when they are not able to do much for themselves.”
This led Dunstan to pursue RN and BSN degrees and he worked as a registered nurse in various healthcare settings. After joining Sentara, he was able to continue his educational journey through Sentara’s tuition assistance program. By leveraging the program, he’s now completed two master’s degrees – an MBA and MHA (Master of Healthcare Administration) – and a certified case manager (CCM) certificate.
Dunstan’s thirst for knowledge and betterment doesn’t end at work. He’s always been fascinated by planes and is working on his private pilot’s license. And while he probably can’t wear them flying, cowboy boots are another of Dunstan’s passions. He’s collected quite a few pairs, including a special pair worn at his MHA graduation.
