Rebecca Jessie is Committed to Quality, Safety – and Flyfishing
When Rebecca Jessie first accepted a role in human resources, she never expected that she would be starting a decades long career in the healthcare field—but she’s now been with Sentara for more than 20 years. Rebecca is Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Sentara RMH Medical Center, where she manages healthcare quality, patient safety and accreditation functions.
She says it was hard for her to predict where she’d end up when she accepted her first role at a small local hospital.
“After several years in HR, I then started as a business manager,” she says. “During that time, I was trained as a performance improvement facilitator. The deeper I got into that role, the more fascinated I was by process improvement tools and statistics. I finally realized that I love collecting and analyzing data and that this type of work was a lot of fun for me.”
Rebecca oversees critical programs like the stroke program and infection prevention and control. Her team uses data to enhance programs and departments to ensure patients receive exceptional and safe care every time they enter the hospital. They work with teams across every discipline to ensure regulatory and best standards are met.
Rebecca has made quite an impact on a variety of programs and departments at Sentara and appreciates the opportunity she has to directly affect patient care without being clinically at the bedside. She says her coworkers have made an even bigger impact on her.
“I really enjoy the people I work with,” she says. “They are some of the most intelligent, hardworking and dedicated individuals, and we have been there for each other through some very difficult times.”
When she’s not at work, Rebecca loves to garden. Not only does she tend to her flowers, but she has a lovely vegetable garden that pairs well with her love of cooking and baking. She and her family enjoy attending Virginia Tech football and basketball games together and are very active with Relay for Life at the university. You can also find them enjoying the outdoors, where Rebecca loves to hone her flyfishing skills.
