Embracing the Night Shift

Emily Oyler chose a career in healthcare in part because she wanted to be someone people could lean on. “I could not think of a better way to spend time with others and help them than becoming a nurse,” Emily says. “As a nurse, I get to be a friend, support system, confidant and advocate for others in their time of need.”

Emily Oyler is a direct care Registered Nurse in the Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital Emergency Department (SMJH). Beginning her career at Sentara RMH Medical Center in 2018 as a cardiac technician, Emily moved on to the role of an RN in the emergency department at SMJH in 2020 after she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She was recognized for her dedication with the “New RN Grad of the Year at SMJH” award.

Since then, Emily has been promoted into the preceptor role during her night shift. As a preceptor, she guides new graduate employees and nursing students. She greatly appreciates the team members she’s worked with in the ER over the last few challenging years.

Working the night shift in the ER, my team and I have become a family,” says Emily, who grew up in Covington, Va. “On nights when we can, we get together and chat about life, our workday, personal goals. In addition, a whole lot of Insomnia Cookies are shared.”

Emily’s next professional goal will be to work on her certified emergency nurse specialization.

Spending time with her golden retriever, Murphy, is one of the best parts of her off time. As a new Charlottesville resident, she also enjoys riding her bike, trying new restaurants, relaxing at coffee spots, swimming, laying by the pool, reading and hiking.
