Transplant Nurse Mirza Amerson Provides Compassionate Care for Patients, Families
“I love that we are able to help so many patients and their families,” says Mirza Amerson, a Transplant Registered Nurse. “Sometimes you don’t realize how many people’s lives you change, but it is so nice to see people get better and feel better after some of the worst moments in their life.”
Mirza works in the Sentara Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, which pioneered kidney, heart and pancreas transplants in the Hampton Roads region. Now, after 40 years, the Sentara Transplant Center has been a part of more than 2,200 transplants.
Transplant nurses play a significant role in the process. They meet with patients who are receiving organs. They also care for deceased donors, working closely with their families during this incredibly emotional time.
“We definitely have a great dynamic,” Mirza explains. “My coworkers and I have lunch together. We also take a moment to just check in with each other and ask how we are doing. Also, our manager, Peggy, is very good about making some vanilla coffee in the afternoons, which is something I look forward to.”
Outside of work, Mirza enjoys spending time with her daughter – going for walks, dancing to silly music and getting together with other little ones for play dates.
Mirza enjoys all the parks in the area. Her favorite restaurants in Virginia Beach? Jet’s Pizza in for Detroit-style pizza and Windy City for Chicago-style pizza.
