After 25 years at Sentara, you’d think she would need more time to think about her favorite part of her job. But Belinda can answer that question in an instant: it’s the people.

My coworkers on my team mean so much to me! The camaraderie in our department makes it easy to come to work and I’ve built life-long friendships,” she says.

“We operate as a unit, so it’s hard not to become friends when you spend so much time together.”

Belinda’s journey to healthcare began at a job fair at her alma mater, East Coast Polytechnic University (ECPI). One day she was wondering what her first job would be, the next day she was applying for a job at Sentara. She is now an Insurance Verifier Representative, supporting Emergency Departments across the system. She says she can’t imagine being anywhere else.

“My departments have always been close-knit, and I think that’s a testament to the type of people Sentara attracts,” she reflects.

We share the same values of caring for our patients and each other,” said Belinda. “When I was in a terrible car accident, my team was there to provide a shoulder to lean on and help me get around. My boss even helped me get to my doctor’s appointments! Years later, when I had breast cancer, the support, friendship and love I received helped me through a really difficult time.”

Belinda has returned the favor in kind to her coworkers many times over and prides herself on her participation in Sentara outreach programs and in her local community. She is looking forward to working until her 30-year milestone at Sentara in a few years.

“With such great benefits, opportunities for growth and such a positive work environment, I couldn’t ever imagine working anywhere else!”
