Cecilia Murga Helps Create an Exceptional Patient Experience

With that, we are grateful for the efforts of all our team members who interact with patients whether they care for them directly or care for them in other ways – greeting them, checking them in for appointments, delivering meals, parking their cars, helping them at gift shops or many other roles.

All of these efforts play a vital part in enhancing patients’ experiences, making them feel valued and ensuring they feel genuinely cared for.

Cecilia Alda I. Murga, a patient representative in the guest services department at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC), explains what patient experience means to her.

“At a certain point in our lives, “Health is Wealth” is a living mantra and not just a saying you post on your corkboards,” says Cecilia, the dedicated patient rep for the 2nd floor medicine and surgical units at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.

if I can improve health every day using my skills, then I am making a difference.”

Cecilia rounds daily on her floor to make sure patients and their families receive the best experience they can despite facing a challenging time. She is also the tele psych liaison for the behavioral health consults at SNVMC.

Working in communications has been Cecilia’s goal since she earned a journalism degree with a minor in psychology. She was a freelance court/school medical interpreter before she joined the Sentara team three years ago.

“What better goal is there in life than to be of service to others?” remarks Cecilia, who’s received a Key Contributor award through Sentara. “So, I am here to serve.”

One project Cecilia inherited is “The SNVMC Tree” in the Health Education Center lobby. This SNVMC Tree “blooms” according to the season. In February, the SNVMC tree was adorned with hearts shaped cut-out with the names of the dedicated team members of the heart and vascular department.  The hospital also has replicas of the tree in the form of a poster in different units.

While she’s not at work, Cecilia volunteers with the local fire department, setting up public events, such as station tours, open houses for Fire Prevention Month in October, Santa visits to schools and other community events.

“I have the highest regard for our first responders,” she says.

Traveling is one of Cecilia’s favorite hobbies, and she’s adventurous about trying new food. She also likes to visit the library in every city she visits. Despite her love of travel, Cecilia is very content to live in Northern Virginia.

“I am 30 minutes from the seat of government and an hour away from the Shenandoah National Park, which includes a 101-mile portion of the Appalachian Trail,” Cecilia describes. “I’m also three hours away from the Atlantic Ocean. Enough said!”
