Operations Coordinator

Did you know?

  • While our team of health information professionals works behind the scenes, they are at the forefront of ensuring patients’ health stories remain accurate, accessible and protected through management of medical records.
  • Medical records must meet regulatory and payment requirements. In the coding and pre-bill areas, health Information professionals ensure the accuracy of patients’ demographic, insurance and other vital information so patients receive the insurance benefits they are expecting.
  • Medical records are also the source of essential data used in performance improvement and outcome measures.

Tracy L. Leigh, operations coordinator, Sentara document management, Military Circle, explains more about the role of a health information professional.

“Medical records are an essential part of improving health every day,” explains Tracy, who’s worked for Sentara for 12 years. “The record must reflect an accurate and timely snapshot of the care that has been given, as well as a plan of action for helping the patient achieve their health goals.”

The benefits are outstanding and continue to get even better, but none of that is as important to me as being part of a team that treats each other with kindness and respect. Sentara is my family away from home.”

Tracy has been working closely with HIM (health information management) leadership and our compliance team to ensure the medical records of our COVID-19 patients have all the documents needed to meet our regulatory requirements. She also continues to help update policy and procedures for HIM Operations.

Learning has always been a passion of Tracy’s, and she enjoys the new developments, discoveries and technologies she frequently encounters at work.

Since working for Sentara, Tracy has gone back to school to earn her associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in health information management and become a registered health information technician. In addition, Tracy serves on the board of the local HIM professional organization – Tidewater Health Information Management Association.

Tracy appreciates being a part of her work team. To bond, they’ve set up potlucks, learned a line dance during breaks, had chili cookoffs and dessert days.

“Sentara is a wonderful company to work for,” Tracy adds. “The benefits are outstanding and continue to get even better, but none of that is as important to me as being part of a team that treats each other with kindness and respect. Sentara is my family away from home.”

Speaking of away from home, Tracy, born and raised in Hampton Roads, participates in the local Pokémon Go community.

“It started as a way to get more active and ended up being a great long-term hobby for me,” Tracy says.

At home, Tracy enjoys curling up with a warm blanket, a Yankee candle nearby and watching the latest true crime docuseries with her dog.
