Raymond Gauthier, Supply Chain Associate
“Without supplies, no one improves health every day. I take that very seriously.”
Raymond Gauthier is the “go-to” person in the stockroom at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, where he has worked since 1979, back when it was called Williamsburg Community Hospital. Raymond knows the facility as well as anyone because of the numerous responsibilities he has had across the hospital.
“Late in 1979, a man named Willard Epperson told me of a job opening in the kitchen at Williamsburg Community Hospital,” Raymond recalls. “At 20 years old, I had no idea at that time that my path beginning in the kitchen over 42 years ago would lead me to Materials Management.”
As a Supply Chain Associate II, Raymond is responsible for ordering and safeguarding ample stock for anesthesia and sterile processing supplies in the operating room, which includes helping with receiving orders and contacting companies about order problems that sometimes arise. The COVID-19 pandemic tested this critical part of the team’s operations, but Raymond says the Materials Management is a strong team who looks out for each other.
“Since COVID-19 has been a challenge for all, we have worked very hard at providing and procuring supplies,” he says. “Although we are a support department, we understand the importance of what we do. We are the fuel to this healthcare system.”
Raymond has experienced first-hand the life-changing impact of high-quality healthcare. His wife, Sharon, whom he met at Sentara, was diagnosed with advanced cancer and in hospice care in 2009. Thanks to excellent care at Sentara and other medical facilities—and their strong faith—she recovered and has been cancer-free since 2011.
I have the utmost respect for all those we serve,” Raymond says. “Everyone in our family has been a patient at the hospital at one time or another.”
Born and raised in Williamsburg, Raymond enjoys all the area offers, including its rivers, the ocean, mountains and historic landmarks. His family has expanded over the years to include grandchildren and pets, who he calls his “fur babies.”
“Spending time with family is the best.”
